After losing against President-elect Donald Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris vowed that she would not give up her “fight for democracy, especially a woman’s right to abortion.”
On Nov. 6, Harris, accompanied by her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and California Representatives Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Lee, delivered her concession speech at Howard University, her alma mater.
Harris urged her supporters to “accept the results” of the election. But she quickly added that the battle for justice and equality would persist “in the voting booth, in the courts and the public square.”
“The outcome of this election is not what we wanted, not what we fought for, not what we voted for,” Harris said, 12 hours after the victory speech of Trump in Florida. “But hear me when I say, the light of America’s promise will always burn bright, as long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting.”
She assured her supporters that she will remain committed to a vision for America “where Americans can pursue their dreams, ambitions and aspirations” without restrictions on personal freedoms. In line with this, Harris also pledged that she would keep fighting for women’s rights, including the right to make decisions about their own reproductive health.
“I will continue to fight for a future where the women of America will have the freedom to make their own decisions about ‘their body’ and not have their government telling them what to do,” Harris said during the 12-minute concession speech.
During the presidential campaign period, Harris released three pro-abortion ads to directly attack Trump.
These ads, which aired on broadcast and cable networks in key swing states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, capitalized on the debate over reproductive rights following the 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade. (Related: Kamala Harris releases three pro-abortion ads targeting Trump while advocating a free-for-all of nationwide baby murder.)
The Democrats thought the strategy would be effective in bringing down Trump just like what they did in 2022 – focusing on reproductive rights while criticizing Trump, his past actions and his role in the reversal of Roe v. Wade.
Aside from this strategy, Harris also brought up the alleged “lies, failure and broken promises” of Trump during his first term as president to portray herself as a strong and fearless candidate willing to take on Trump head-on. Harris also reminded voters of all the controversies associated with the former president, including his supposed failures in securing funding for a border wall.
The Democrats chose to attack Trump rather than engage in a policy-heavy discussion during the campaign period. But this strategy proved to be ineffective.
